Description
Red Fork Derrick - The Red Fork Derrick is located in Red Fork, which is now a suburb of Tulsa, OK. Standing at a height of 154 feet, it is the tallest derrick in the United States. The derrick is a reproduction of the original that is situated on a portion of the original allotment of land, which produced the Sue Bland #1 discovery well. The original drill was completed on June 25, 1901. Sue Bland, a Creek citizen, was the wife of Dr. John C. W. Bland, owner of the homestead where the well was drilled. He and fellow doctor Fred S. Clinton funded the risky enterprise. This well brought the first nation wide publicity and oil boom, and made Tulsa the " Oil Capital of the World". Years later, Route 66 was built right along side of where the derrick was situated.
