Description
Philadelpihia's City Hall is located in downtown Phildelphia, in Penn Square. Construction was started in 1871, and finished in 1901. With almost 700 rooms, City Hall is the largest municipal building in the United States and one of the largest in the world. The building is topped with a 37 ft., 27 - ton bronze statue of the city founder, William Penn. It is one of 250 sculptures that adorn the building inside and out. The Penn Statue is the tallest atop of any building in the world. The tower also features clocks 26 ft. in diameter on all four sides of the metal portion of the tower. Penn's statue is hollow, and a narrow access tunnel through it leads to a small (22-inch-diameter) hatch atop the hat. City Hall is a National Historic Landmark. During 2006, it was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Civil Engineers.
